Congrats, Henrik Ødegaard: Norwegian Olympic Hero

Missouri Mavericks defensemen Henrik Ødegaard is headed to Sochi to play for his native Norway's Olympic hockey team.  He last played for Team Norway in the 2013 IIHF World Championships where they went 3-4, missing the medal round.

Here he is with the Mavs beating the hell out of some dude:

Read Vahe Gregorian's article on Ødegaard, and his response to the outpouring of fan support he has received in just a few months here in town.  He is the only Olympian with any ties to the Kansas City area, even in his short stay here.  What that says about winter sports in Kansas City is probably notable, but not surprising.

On the flip side, it's wild to think that Norway values hockey less than, like, cross-country skiing.  I suppose it's a lot like how Americans look at bobsledders.  Name three bobsledders.  YOU CAN'T.  Therefore, let me personally invite every player from Team Norway to sign a contract with the Mavericks so they can be properly appreciated.  I mean, everyone playing for the Mavericks is great, but Mats Trygg and Anders Bastiansen is so much more fun to say.  Oh, and Mats Zuccarello should play for the Mavericks too.

Norway is in Group B with Canada, Finland, and Austria.  Norway is currently ranked ninth in the IIHF rankings, facing the fifth, second, and fifteenth ranked teams, respectively.  Here is their schedule:

Mavs Home Opener November 3rd

The Mavs held a press conference earlier today.  You can read about all of the announcements here.  Of the big announcements, we have:

1. The Mavs home opener will be November 3rd at the Independence Events Center, narrowly missing the greatest month of hockey in Kansas City in over forty years.  Oh well.  But, yay, home opener!  The opponent is TBA, and the rest of the schedule has yet to be released.  The CHL has ten teams this year, losing Fort Wayne and Evansville to the CHL, and Rio Grande Valley and Dayton to operations cessation.  The Denver Cutthroats are the only new member.  Still a solid core of teams, though, and it would be interesting to know if the Mavs are biding their time for a move to the ECHL in the future.
2. All of the Mavs 66 games this season will be broadcast on KUDL 1660.  1660 is currently the radio home of the Kansas City T-Bones.  Good to have games on the radio, as any media saturation can only mean more exposure leading to even more sell-outs.  No word on if MetroSports will carry any games like they did two years ago.
3. The Mavs are having a FanFest September 8th at IEC.  Cool stuff.  You should go.
4. The Mavs have signed two players, Brian Bicek and Blake Forsyth.  Bicek had 33 goals last season for the Evansville IceMen, while Forsyth – a former Mav – returns after a year.  He tied Cole Ruwe for the league lead in plus/minus for defensemen with a +26 rating in 2010-11.  

Also, some guy named Gio Flamminio exists.  He doesn't play for the Mavs, but who cares.  What a name!

Oh yeah, and the Mavs are going very 'former Florida Panthers alternate jersey meets Denver Broncos logo' with their new design:

Eh, it's a pass, because why not.  It's fairly simple, even if there's a giant horse head on everything.

Charlie Effinger Leaves Mavs for Shot at the Big Time

Missouri Mavericks goalie Charlie Effinger (Eff-bomb) is leaving the team to pursue better opportunities in the hockey world.

From the Examiner:

Effinger has been flooded with offers following his brilliant 2011-12 season with the Mavericks, where they took eventual CHL champion Fort Wayne to the seventh game of the conference championship series. 

“This was never about money,” Effinger said. “Hilly and Brent know that – and I want the fans to know that they bent over backwards and offered me 18 different ways to stay with the team. But they couldn’t offer me what I can get in the ECHL.” 

When a player signs with the ECHL, he is basically a free agent and can be signed by any AHL team. 

Effinger signed a two-way contract last season with the Mavericks and Chicago, of the AHL. However, Chicago is goalie-deep and there is little chance Effinger can get a legitimate shot with the Wolves.

Effinger holds almost every Mavericks goaltending record by default.  He played 64 regular season games totaling 3,790:01 minutes with the Mavs – the most of any Mav goaltender – and went 41-18-3.  He started all eleven playoff games for the Mavs last season, going 7-4.

It is reported the defending CHL champs the Fort Wayne Komets are interested in signing Effinger.  The Komets made the jump to the ECHL after the end of last season.

You can't blame the guy for pursuing his passion, especially someone who has proven their level of talent is much higher than "AA" hockey.  It's too bad he can't take the spot on the AHL roster in Chicago, but it seems like it's just a matter of time he will land somewhere.  Only 26 years old and he gets to play hockey for a living.  Wicked sweet, eh?

It's that time again!  The Mavericks are signing guys, so that's fun.  This, of course, is just the beginning, as many of the players from last season will most likely sign over the course of the next few weeks.  A schedule for next season has not been released yet.  So far, the Mavs have seven players signed up for next season.

Monday is the day Glendale said signatures are due for a petition to make potential owner Greg Jamison's lease agreement a referendum on the November ballot. However, organizers now say they have until July 16 to submit the signatures. 

Further clouding resolution is a sales-tax initiative petition recently presented to the city to make it a referendum on the November ballot. The fear is if the tax hike doesn't go through, the city might not be able to finance the Jamison deal.

Meanwhile, a group of citizens known as "Glendale First!" has formed to help educate the public about what they believe is "misinformation and exaggerated numbers" being distributed by the petition gatherers, according to its website, and to get the word out about the positive impact a professional sports team has on a city.

So, we may know more about this by tomorrow, we may not.  It doesn't seem to matter for Kansas Citians anyway since apparently Toronto's David Shoalts from the Globe and Mail claims Seattle and Quebec City are the front runners for a team (even though Quebec City and Quebecor never formally mentioned their intentions to have a team and Seattle's Chris Hansen really seems to want an NBA team before an NHL team).  But, y'know, this is the same old story.  Remember, "2b clear, nothing even close."

Anyway, after the jump you will find comparative attendance figures for the American "AAA" and "AA" hockey leagues; the AHL, ECHL, CHL, and SPHL.  "AAA" and "AA" are baseball minor-league designation terms, and that is the reason for the " " marks around those acronyms or letters or whatever.  The charts are not sortable, because really, they don't need to be sortable for you to enjoy them.  When we combine the figures, we get some really fun results.  You should stick around for that.

Mavs One Win Away From Final (and One Loss Away From Ending Their Season)

If you like Game Sevens to decide who goes to the CHL Finals, well, then you will love what the Mavs are doing right now.  After losing tonight to Fort Wayne in Game Six, the Mavs set up a Game Seven to decide if they move on to the CHL Finals to take on rival the Wichita Thunder.  Or they could just lose and end their season.  That's pretty intense!  But, don't just take my word for it.  If you want to know what it's like to be a part of a Game Seven series deciding game, just ask any Rangers/Senators/Panthers/Devils/Capitals/Bruins fans you know.  They'll tell ya.

The CHL Playoffs: Just as Tough as the NHL Playoffs

Puck Daddy:  Why wait? Hockey fight during ceremonial puck drop before CHL playoff game

Last week I posted the video of the Penguins-Flyers brawl and shouting match.  With the bad blood between those two teams, their upcoming playoff series will be one of the most enjoyable to watch.  Easily, one of the most enjoyable to watch.

Well, not to be outdone, an intense fight broke out this past friday between CHL rivals the Texas Brahmas and the Allen Americans during Game 4 of their opening round series.  Observe:

Yes, that's a fight between Brett Clouthier of the Americans and Ryan Hand of the Brahmas DURING THE CEREMONIAL PUCK DROP!!!!  Of course, the Mavs could very well play one of these teams, but it would not be until the Cup Finals.

Your move, NHL.

Wow, That Was Fast

It only took six days, but the Mavs swept the Evansville IceMen in the first round of the Turner Conference bracket of the CHL playoffs.  Here are links to the summaries of each game, and video highlights (if available).

This is the third time in three years of existence that the Mavs have made it to the second round of the playoffs, but the first time they have made it to the Conference Finals (the previous two years the second round was a semi-final round).

The Mavericks are patiently waiting for the winner of the Fort Wayne and Rapid City matchup.  Fort Wayne leads the series 3-1, and can wrap it up at home on Sunday.  As mentioned before, the Mavs tied the season series with Fort Wayne (1-1), and a 4-1 record against Rapid City.

On the Berry Conference side of the bracket, Wichita leads Rio Grande Valley 3-1, with the next game this Saturday in Wichita.  They will play the winner of Texas and Allen(, Texas...).  Their next game is this Friday at (North Richland Hills,) Texas.

Where Will the Mavs Finish in the Turner Conference?

Third.  How do we know that?  Well, according to sportsclubstats.com, after the Mavs still had a 1% chance of finishing fifth in the conference even after they clinched.  That's not right...

To the standings!

Remember the tiebreakers:
1. Most non-shootout wins
2. Head-to-Head record
3. Goals for/Goals Against Differential

Fort Wayne won tonight, moving them to 85 points.  They can only be overtaken by Evansville.  So, not first.

The Mavs cannot catch Evansville because, although the Mavs can win tomorrow and tie them in points, Evansville will still have one more non-shootout win.  Thus, not second.

It's a battle between the Mavs and Rapid City for the third and fourth spot.

Rapid City is done playing, and they are tied with the Mavs with 82 points.  The Mavs have a game in hand, and if they gain a point by going to overtime, they will finish above the Rush.  If the Mavs lose, move on to the next tiebreaker.

The Mavs and Rapid City are tied in non-shootout wins.  If the Mavs win in regulation or overtime, obviously they will have more points and more regulation/overtime wins.  If they lose, they are still tied.  Move on to the next tiebreaker.

The Mavs won the season series 4-1 record against Rapid City this season.  The Mavs will finish third.  Though, props to the Rush for their amazing goal differential.

This means the Mavs will either play the #2 seed Evansville IceMen or the #2 seed Fort Wayne Komets in the first round of the playoffs.  Oh, and it could definitely be either of those clubs, depending on what happens Sunday.  Evansville clinches first with a win and Fort Wayne loss in regulation.  With a Fort Wayne OT loss, Evansville needs to win to a) have as many points as Fort Wayne AND/OR b) force a tiebreaker.  That would give them both 86 points, and 37 non-shootout wins.  Then, Evansville needs to do some serious goal differentiating to force the deciding tiebreaker, a 7-6 season series over the Komets.

Or Fort Wayne could win and ruin all of the fun.

By the way, the Mavs were 4-2 against the IceMen this year, and 1-1 against the Komets (what an odd, unbalanced schedule).

Go out and support the Mavs tomorrow as they battle no one for third place!

Mavericks Clinch 2012 CHL Playoffs

They Mavs have beaten the Bloomington Blaze, clinching the final spot in the Turner Conference of the Central Hockey League.  They have eliminated the Quad City Mallards.  The conference is so tight that the Mavs can still finish as high as first.  Fort Wayne, the first place team, has 83 points after a win tonight, but the Mavs can still overtake them by winning their final two games this weekend.  The tiebreakers are all kinds of messy and sordid, but let's not get into that right now.  Let's not worry about it. Let's dance!

Again, it's not the NHL, but it is a playoff hockey team in the Kansas City area.  It's better than no playoff hockey in the Kansas City area.

Are the Mavs in the Playoffs Yet?

Short answer: Not quite, threat level "Blue"

Long answer: ...

Well, close.  They still wouldn't have clinched with a win over Tulsa on Sunday, but if so they would only need a point.  Rapid City had themselves an excellent weekend, and clinched with a win tonight.  That being said, it’s down to the Mavs and Quad City.  The Mavs still need three points to finish off the Mallards, or hope they lose two of their final three games.  The Mallards went 1-1 this past weekend and lost tonight.  Also, they have played one more game than the Mavs, and trail by four points.  Let's look at the standings:

Remember, the tie-breaking procedures work thusly:

-Most Wins (not including shootout wins)

-Head-to-Head Record

-Goals For/Against Differential

With Rapid City clinching tonight (it is mathematically impossible for QC to catch RC), let’s just look at Quad City.

The Mavs do not have the tiebreaker with Quad City, having lost five of the eight games.

Quad City plays this Wednesday.  If they lose, they are not eliminated since they can conceivably still win their final two games, tie the Mavs on the first tiebreaker, and beat them on the head-to-head tiebreaker.  If the Mavs go 1-2-1 in their final four games, they clinch because Quad City is mathematically unable to catch the Mavs.  But, if the Mavs fail to gain at least three points in the next four games, AND Quad City wins at least two games of their final three, they will clinch over the Mavs.  Oh, Quad City, will you ever just go away?  

I don't know about you, but I'm exhausted.  Go out and support your Mavs this Friday and Saturday!!!

Presenting the Missouri Mavericks Playoff Threat Level

Hey, are you a Mavericks fan worried about their playoff chances?!?!?!  Do you want a more visual way to understand how close the Mavericks are to the playoffs?!?!  Do you like threat level charts?! Well, worry no more because Lost City of Bettman presents the Missouri Mavericks Playoff Threat Level indicator!  Currently, the Mavs are in the "Blue", meaning they are every bit as good as last year's Mavs, and should make the playoffs.  But, really, how close are they to the playoffs? 

Remember, the top four teams in each conference makes the playoffs.  The Mavs have seven games remaining, and they are third in the Turner Conference with 72 points.  They are ahead of fourth place Rapid City (72 points) because of their head-to-head series, and fifth place Quad City (70 points).  The Mavs probably will not catch second place Fort Wayne (78 points).

The Mavs will definitely clinch one of the four Turner Conference playoff spots with a 5-1-1 record (83 points), which will be one more point than Quad Cities can possibly obtain.

Oh, this may be of some importance.  The CHL tiebreakers, in order of importance:

-Most Wins (not including shootout wins)

-Head-to-Head Record

-Goals For/Against Differential

The final number is Regulation and Overtime Period Wins.  Notice how the Mavs really cannot afford to have the tiebreaker come down to the GF/GA differential.

2012 Champions: Stat-Nerding the Third-ish Quarter of the Season

That's Charlie Effinger.  He just won the Goaltender of the Week Award for the third time this season, ya heard. 

Although there have only been fourteen games since the last time we checked in with the Mavericks, there are only twenty games left in something like forty days.  So this is as good of a time as any to see what the Mavs are doing right, doing wrong, and need to do during the home stretch of the season.  (Note: this review follows a similar format as the second quarter stats post, so in lieu of me repeating stats, please refer any comparisons to that previous post.)

Vern Cooper and Putting Things In Perspective

I’ve been mulling this post over for a while, not really wanting to write it for various reasons and not really knowing how to write it.  For me (read: you don’t care), writing is cathartic.  For others, writing is a form of expression or way of conveying messages or making money, etc.  But, I find it to be an outlet to what I’m feeling.  Thus, the blog you see in front of you.  “No NHL in KC, well, by gosh, I will write a blog and that will make me feel better!” (/shakes fist aggressively).  That sort of thing, if that makes any sense.

That being said, I’m not writing this as a precept or profound teaching on life, nor is the epigraph above meant to convey that message (trivia: I’m not a very deep person).  Instead, I want to offer the story of recent-former Missouri Mavericks forward Vern Cooper as a counter example to a blog post I read over the summer by the writer formerly known as Will McDonald over at Royals Review.  Please read his post.  It’s depressing, but kind of true, but kind of not, thus the reason why this is a rebuttal, of sorts.

(Just as a side note, I do not know Vern nor do I have a full understanding of the reasons concerning his departure.  I can only make base inferences through research, prior examples, and personal introspective confusion.  That said, my assumptions about his future are just that, assumptions.)
(Update: If I did not make it clear, one main reason I did not want to write this is because, like Will, I did not want it to sound like a "This is what so-and-so teaches us about life" thing.  That type of thinking is not productive to the main point which I hope is clear.)

Welcome to the CHL All-Star break!  Your Missouri Mavericks are currently fifth in the seven-team Turner Conference with 35 points.  They are 16-13-3 overall, and are 8-8-1 with 17 points over the course of the second quarter of the season.  The Mavs are technically still a playoff team with this record.  They have 96 GF and 103 GA. 

2010-11 season, after 32 games:

90 GA

-7 GF and -13(!) GA from one season ago.  Where has everything gone so terribly wrong?

This Brings Back Memories...

Last Friday, in a 7-4 win over the Laredo Bucks, the Missouri Mavericks donned the original red and grays of the Kansas City's last semi-successful hockey franchise, the IHL's Blades.  The jerseys were auctioned off after the game, with a portion of the money going to Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City.

The throwbacks look pretty true to the originals (except the number and name text looks a little bit off), and it's good to have a team in the city that can relive a part of Kansas City hockey past.  Here are a few photos for comparison.  I imagine this is what the Blades jersey would look like if they were still around and went retro with a "modern look" like oh so many American sports franchises.

Featuring the 2011-12 Mavericks Commercial

There is a new Missouri Mavericks commercial making its way around the local TV channels.  And here it is:

It seems like a pretty simple, straightforward marketing campaign.  The National Anthem in the background is a nice touch.  Though, I can't help but wonder WHAT REASON ARE THEY HERE?!?!?  I keed, I keed.

Denied reasons include:

• I'm here because I was born to be a hockey player. (many players are Canadian, so the reference doesn't work).
• I don't play hockey for the post-game riots.
• I'm not here to cuss out the media.
• I didn't come to KC for the, um, err, beautiful...beaches... 
• I am here so I don't have to see Pierre Maguire between the benches.
• I am not a candy ass!
• I'm here as a means to get to the Chicago Wolves.  That would be pretty cool.
• I'm not a crook!
• I'm not here for the mascot. (ed. note: that's the #1 reason why anyone joins the Mavs)
